Functionality is the Key

Functionality within the home has a subconscious, yet direct impact on comfort, well-being, and overall day-to-day efficiency. I believe that functionality is the core of the home, and as such, it is the core of my design principles. My philosophy is simple – if I wouldn’t live in the spaces I’m designing, then I won’t design it. Simple.

I design homes to be intuitive – that is, having a logical flow that feels natural and instinctive. Having the secluded private open space (backyard) directly accessible from the living areas, and the quieter bedrooms zoned together, away from the louder living spaces, are just some examples of the thought processes I follow while designing.

The orientation of a home plays a significant role in overall well-being. I always aim to position rooms where we spend the most time to maximise natural light. This principle extends to the outdoor spaces as well, where I always aim for the secluded private open space to receive direct sunlight throughout much of the day.

In instances such as subdivisions, where space can be extremely limited, it is crucial to be efficient in how you use it. From utilising the awkward space underneath staircases, to minimising unnecessary circulation (hallway) spaces to maximise living space, I always ensure that every square metre of land is used to its maximum potential.
