In this modern era, open plan living is the mode that everyone seems to go. However, it is important to discuss whether this suits your lifestyle, and we can do by examining some advantages and disadvantages of this style of living.
The advances in heating and cooling technology have allowed this concept to take off and allowed for ease of introduction in a modern home, e.g. in an open plan kitchen, it is not necessary to have enclosed areas to cut off heat from the kitchen.

  1. With a free plan space, your home will feel bigger, and you will better take advantage of the area.
  2. There is added flexibility based on your needs, e.g. you can have a massive table so that you can entertain, and these changes come without making major architectural changes.
  3. It makes for the more easier socialising, e.g. the whole family can interact in a wide-open space doing different activities.
  4. Probably one of the main benefits is allowing natural light to come through by opening walls and spreads throughout the home.

However, we need to be aware of the drawbacks that open plan living brings your privacy is diminished if you need some space to yourself. You may want to have a more formal living environment doing your cooking without guests bothering you. The mess will be there for all to see and so you cannot hide it in an open plan environment, and it is nice to have a clean room where guests can enjoy. The smoke and smell will travel everywhere, and the heat generated will be hard to contain. The noise will go everywhere, and there will be no hiding from everyone’s noise. The trend now is for open plan living, but this could change as fashions come and go and so your house could become outdated.
In conclusion, it is a matter of preference whether you opt for an open plan living environment or prefer more enclosed and separated areas, but the above factors will play a role in your decision.
